HCD Ltd acted as Principal Contractor to deliver the complex demolition of multiple structures at Bradley Lane, a site with a long industrial history and a diverse mix of buildings. At the centre stood a multi‑storey brick mill, rebuilt several times following historic fires and constructed over a running Leat, requiring meticulous assessment, protection, and phased dismantling throughout the works.
Surrounding the mill were various industrial buildings of mixed construction, each demanding its own tailored approach. Our package included ecological support, supervised soft‑strip works, habitat protection, asbestos removal, structural demolition down to slab level, and full materials management. Working closely with ecologists, the team undertook detailed surveys and constructed a dedicated brick bat house in accordance with planning requirements and Natural England guidance, ensuring sensitive species were fully protected.
Asbestos was safely removed following extensive surveys, and the redundant structures were dismantled with care to protect the underlying Leat and neighbouring properties. Hardcore arisings were crushed and retained for reuse, supporting a sustainable redevelopment strategy. The project also included the controlled removal of a PWB crane beam connecting the old mill to an active factory opposite the site.
Despite challenges posed by irregular construction, ecological sensitivities, and the presence of the underground water channel, we delivered the works safely, efficiently, and with robust environmental controls. Following successful completion of the demolition, we were instructed to begin site remediation, preparing the area for the next phase of redevelopment.
