Project

Llanwern Hot Mill

Project Overview

HCD Ltd is delivering the complex decommissioning and demolition of the iconic Llanwern Hot Strip Mill, once internationally recognised as the world’s first fully computer-controlled hot strip mill. Our works involve the removal of hazardous materials, full industrial decommissioning, and the controlled demolition of extensive steelmaking infrastructure, reducing the former mill to slab level in preparation for major regeneration.

Using our fleet of specialist demolition excavators, and the world-leading Fortress FS245R shear, we are efficiently processing and recycling substantial steel volumes, maximising material recovery and sustainability. Early structural assessments informed a safe, engineering-led methodology, with phased demolition beginning along the western boundary of the site.

Bordering live operational areas of the Llanwern Steelworks, the project requires continuous coordination with Tata Steel, neighbouring businesses, and the local community. Through clear communication, controlled access management, and regular progress updates, we ensure safe delivery with minimal disruption.

This landmark project marks a significant step in transforming one of the UK’s most historic steelmaking sites. We are proud to lead the works with a commitment to precision, environmental responsibility, and industry-leading demolition expertise.
