HCD Ltd was appointed to undertake a comprehensive demolition and site clearance package at the existing Lidl supermarket and former Poundstretcher in Neath, South Wales. The works formed a critical enabling phase of Lidl’s redevelopment plans, paving the way for the construction of a larger, modern retail store to better serve the local community.
The works involved the demolition of two single-storey portal-framed buildings, comprising the existing supermarket and neighbouring gym, together with the complete removal of all above and below-ground structures and infrastructure. Prior to demolition, we carried out an extensive soft strip programme that included the removal and responsible disposal of all internal fixtures, fittings and services.
Following the completion of the strip-out works, we progressed with the demolition of both buildings and the removal of all associated structures. The scope extended beyond the superstructures to include the excavation and removal of reinforced concrete foundations, pile foundations, hardstanding areas, drainage systems, petrol interceptors, boundary treatments and soft landscaping.
The project presented several unique challenges due to the site’s constrained location. One boundary directly adjoined Network Rail infrastructure, requiring all works to be undertaken in strict accordance with a Basic Asset Protection Agreement (BAPA). We worked closely with Network Rail representatives and the client team to ensure safe operations throughout the project, maintaining full compliance with railway protection requirements and preventing any disruption to rail activities.
In addition to the railway interface, the site was bordered by an operational petrol filling station. Careful planning, robust exclusion zones and stringent environmental controls were implemented to protect neighbouring assets and ensure the safety of both site personnel and adjacent operators throughout the demolition process.
Sustainability was a key focus for the project. Rather than exporting demolition materials from site, we processed all suitable arisings through on-site crushing operations. The recycled material was then stockpiled for future reuse, significantly reducing waste, lowering transport movements and supporting the environmental objectives of the redevelopment. This approach maximised material recovery while delivering both environmental and commercial benefits for the client.
Through effective stakeholder engagement, meticulous planning and the application of safe and sustainable demolition practices, we successfully delivered a fully cleared site ready for redevelopment. The project was completed without disruption to neighbouring businesses or Network Rail operations, providing Lidl with a clean and prepared development platform for the construction of its new larger store in Neath.
The successful completion of this project further demonstrates our capability in delivering complex demolition and enabling works within constrained environments, particularly where operational infrastructure, environmental considerations and public-facing facilities require the highest levels of planning, coordination and safety management.
